This is the
entrance to the dragon's lair. As you can see he is outside the castle
defending the entrance. To enter the castle you have to pass
under the loop of his tail on the left. The loop of tail
is tall enough to allow a six foot tall adult to walk under it
without stooping!
This is an example of
a European style dragon. Notice the strong, clawed "hands",
the horns, and the armor plated skin. The plates on the neck
and belly closely resemble the scales on the belly of a snake.
Dragons were frequently
shown near castles and were often the victims of sorcery. They
were sometimes turned to stone. This dragon sculpture with
the vines growing on it and the rough texture of its back and skin
clearly represents such a victim of sorcery. |
